Public Bus Service
You can take a local bus to some destinations around the island. However, if you are a cruise ship passenger we would not recommend this option unless you are on one of the ships that will spend most of the day in port. If your ship is in for only a few hours then do not use the local bus as the ships will leave without you if you are not back by the time they set sail.
Buses in Cayman are mini-buses and vans, not large city buses as you may be used to. The bus depot is next to the public library in central George Town, a 10-minute walk from the cruise ship dock. You will want to take the distinguished buses, which will be marked (in small letters) with NS, WB, EE, followed by a number. The bus ride to should cost around $3.00 to $5.00 per person and depending on your destination. Buses are supposed to leave once an hour, but they often sit waiting until the bus fills up before they leave.
Please note that buses do not run on Sundays. You can reach a telephone hotline for public comment and feedback regarding the public transport system by calling (345) 945-5100.
It wasn’t until relatively recently that Grand Cayman got its first bus service. The bus terminal is on Edward Street, adjacent to the Public Library, in George Town. Daily services commence around 6 am and fares start at CI $1.50.
Licensed buses have blue number plates and accept both US and Cayman Islands dollars. There are a few bus stops around the island, but buses can be flagged down from the side of the road. For further information about Grand Cayman’s bus service telephone 945-5100.
Schedules are, shall we say, flexible.
